Abstract

Scope of the Operator Guide: The Service Delivery Platform (SDP) has evolved since Moriana's last major SDP Report in 2004 (SDP 1.0 Operator Guide). Today’s third generation SDP puts more emphasis on business aspects. It is built around the Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) which facilitates integration with OSS/BSS and enables efficient service orchestration and management. Furthermore, is now clear that the SDP will be crucial in bridging Telecom with the Internet and Web 2.0. To date, SDP has been adopted with most success in the areas of mobile content and services. The adoption of SDP for voice and other core telecom services has not enjoyed the same level of market success. The advance of new types of services such as IPTV, Mobile TV and Mobile Advertising is driving the creation of specialized SDPs. Moriana research has confirmed that the substantial majority of successful SDP projects have been driven by a clearly defined business case. In contrast, some SDP deployments that have been a pure “technology push” and have lacked commercial focus have often resulted in what one operator termed “spectacular failures”. Recent market consolidation in the SDP space is in line with the normal market dynamics and competitive pressures of the business cycle. This consolidation also validates the point that service providers are looking for comprehensive solutions addressing their specific technical and business objectives.
